Course won’t refund fee after Dad died?

Hi, I was on a 1 week course in Prague recently which cost 1000 British pounds. My father died on the first night of the course and I had to leave immediately to travel home.
The course administrators have refused to refund me saying they could not resell my place on the course. I am to attend the same course in September and they are refusing to give me any discount, which will cost me another 1,000GBP.
Yet a budget airline was willing to refund me a ticket in these circumstances.
Is there anything I can do? Thanks.
