Are airlines shooting themselves in the foot by adding all of these extra fees?

I realise that many of these fees are not “new” in the sense that they have been around at least a year. But recently many airlines added about $10 to their checked baggage fees.
Most of them now are charging $5 for a snack, also.
I already have stopped checking bags, and I just bring some dried fruit on the plane with me as a snack. I would rather die of starvation than be nickeled and dimed to death.
I travel to Europe a lot and Asia a lot, so unfortunately I can’t drive, take a train or bus. But the moment they start charging for carry on luggage is the moment I start taking the train or driving.
I am going to S. Korea in July to visit my sister on a military base. Even with her military discount the ticket is still $1,200. There is no way I am paying about $100 to bring luggage there to. I’d rather go naked than give them any more of my money.
What do you think? Are they shooting themselves in the foot?
